This has been a hot topic of conversation for a while, but Yeti has stepped in and cleared up this disputed subject once and for all.

The short answer is ‘Yes’ – Yeti cups are dishwasher safe. You may have found some conflicting information as this wasn’t always the case (Yeti suggested hand washing only pre-2015), but have since completed tests and found washing your Yeti in a dishwasher has no negative impact on them at all.

In this article, we discuss what makes Yeti drinkware dishwashers safe and how to safely wash Yeti tumblers and cups, both in your dishwasher and by hand.

How to Clean a Yeti Tumbler in the Dishwasher

Instructions

Step 1

L Main Expanded T Magslider Lid

Remove the lid from your Yeti cup and break it down into different parts. Depending on which Yeti cup you have, there will be different removable parts. Check the care instructions for your specific model’s details.
Don’t forget to remove the gasket, too, as a lot of grime can build up here. If you have any trouble taking the lid apart (and getting it back together again), there’s a handy little guide from Yeti that will help you out.

Step 2

Put the gasket into your dishwasher’s utensil basket.
If your Yeti has a stronghold lid, then put the MagSlider, magnets, and rubber sleeve in the basket with your gaskets too. The same goes for the straw from a straw cap.

Step 3

Take the remainder of the lid and place it on the top shelf of your dishwasher.

Step 4

The actual cup, bottle, tumbler, jug, etc., can be placed anywhere you like in your dishwasher. Just find a spare spot for yours. Yeti cups are made from tough 18 8 stainless steel, so they are completely fine going through a dishwasher cycle on any rack.
It was initially thought that the double wall vacuum insulation could be problematic and potentially damaged in the dishwasher. Yeti did a lot of testing, though, and found that this wasn’t actually a problem and it is safe to use a dishwasher to clean your Yeti.

Step 5

Press the on button on your dishwasher and let it do its thing!
Once your dishwasher has finished, remove all of your Yeti’s pieces and dry them thoroughly. Once they are completely dry, you can put everything back together again, and your Yeti will be as good as new and ready for your next adventure.

Hand Washing a Yeti Tumbler

Sometimes, it might not be practical (or even possible) to wash your Yeti drinkware. Some of the larger models don’t actually fit too well in the dishwasher, so it’s more convenient to hand wash these.

Maybe you don’t have a dishwasher – whatever the reason, hand washing your Yeti is an easy thing to do and, providing you do it properly, will bring your cup back to brand new condition again.

Step 1

Take any of the removable parts mentioned in step 2 above and soak them in soapy water for 2 hours. Any mild dish soap is safe to use, so no special materials are needed.

A quick note on the straw caps – let the straw and lid soak as normal. If you notice there is grime around the pressure valve, don’t remove the gasket from around it (leave it alone); simply let water run over the lid and gently lift the gasket with your finger to allow the running water to wash away the grime.

Step 2

Clean the inside of your Yeti as you would any standard coffee cup with dish soap.

If you have some extra stubborn stains that are refusing to come off, then Yeti have some of their own deep cleaning tablets you can use. Just fill up your cup with warm water, drop one of the tablets in, wait 5 minutes, pour out the water, and then wash by hand.

This is usually enough to get rid of the stains, but if you have a large Yeti (bigger than 30 ounces) try 2 tablets for a thorough clean.

Step 3

Once all parts have been washed, make sure they are completely dry before putting everything back together again.

Step 4

It is not very common for Yeti’s to rust, but it can sometimes happen (although this is rare). If you are one of the rare owners who find rust marks – any stainless steel cleaner will have it polished and looking like new again very easily.

Your Yeti is now clean and ready to use again.

Are Other Brands Dishwasher Safe?

Yeti’s are 100% dishwasher safe. But what about some of the other brands that compete with Yeti – such as RTIC and Hydro Flask, and Corkcicle – make similar drinkware products? We did our own research to see if some other cups are dishwasher safe too.

Corkcicle

From January 2020, some Corkcicle mugs, tumblers, and canteens are dishwasher-safe (top rack only). This is not the case for all of their products though, so you will need to check the care instructions that come with your cup.

If you purchased before this time, then unlike a Yeti cup, any stainless steel Corkcicle drinkware product can only be hand-washed and is NOT dishwasher safe.

If you have one of the hybrid canteens, then the glass body can be safely washed in your dishwasher, but the base (which is steel) should be washed by hand.

RTIC

If you have an RTIC tumbler, they make it very clear on their website that these are not dishwasher safe.

RTIC tumblers must be hand-washed only using mild dish soap and water. Any cleaners containing chlorine should not be used. Bleach should not be used, either.

The RTIC website also states that tumblers should not be put in the freezer or microwave.

Hydro Flask

Just like your Yeti cup, all Hydro Flask bottles that are powder coated are dishwasher safe.

If you have a Hydro Flask coffee mug, these are not powder-coated and should not be cleaned in the dishwasher – handwash only.

Lids and caps can be placed on the top rack of your dishwasher, or you can hand wash using warm soapy water. Hydro Flask sells a straw and lid cleaning set that can be used too.

Hydro Flask also has its own cleaning tablets that you drop into some warm water and let your lid soak for around 30 minutes.

Your actual bottle or mug can be washed in the dishwasher using the same method as used for your Yeti cups, or you can use a bottle brush and warm, soapy water.
