Why I Invented Birdle

I have always loved birds and enjoy learning about the incredible variety of species found around the world. A friend at work loves playing daily puzzle games and introduced me to Worldle—the game where you guess the country from its silhouette.

That inspired me to create a similar game, but with birds instead of countries.

Birdle features more than 50 bird silhouettes that rotate daily, giving you a new species to identify each day.

I’m hoping to keep expanding the collection over time by adding many more birds from around the world.

One of the biggest challenges is choosing birds with silhouettes that are distinctive enough to identify. Many closely related species have almost identical profiles—for example, gulls, ducks, sparrows and warblers can be surprisingly difficult to tell apart from their silhouettes alone. On the other hand, birds like pelicans, flamingos, toucans, bald eagles and owls have unmistakable shapes that make for a much more enjoyable puzzle.

If you have a bird you’d love to see included in Birdle, we’d love to hear from you. Send us your suggestion and we’ll consider adding it in a future update.

Just keep in mind that the more distinctive the silhouette, the better!

We’ll do our best to incorporate as many suggestions as possible over the coming months as we continue to expand the game.

In the meantime, thanks for playing Birdle—and happy birding!
